What Is a GIF?

Transparency Notes
GIF supports binary transparency: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. So a PNG’s transparent areas are preserved, but the smooth semi-transparent edges that PNG can store are flattened to hard edges in GIF. For crisp logos this is usually fine; for soft shadows or feathered edges, PNG keeps more detail. JPG images have no transparency, so they convert as fully opaque.
A Note on File Size
For simple, flat-color images a GIF can be smaller than the original. For detailed photos, GIF’s 256-color palette and older compression usually make it larger than a JPG — the converter shows both sizes so you can compare.
