Choosing the Right DPI
DPI (dots per inch) decides how much detail each exported image holds. It is the single setting that matters most, so here is exactly what each option produces for a standard A4 page (8.27 × 11.69 inches):

Those figures are exact, not estimates — the tool renders at scale = DPI ÷ 72, because PDF measures its pages in points and there are 72 points to an inch. You can also type any custom DPI between 36 and 600 if you need a specific pixel width.
The honest recommendation: start at 150. It looks sharp on every screen, files stay manageable, and it prints acceptably. Move to 300 only when the image is genuinely going to a printer, and to 600 only for posters or when you need to magnify fine detail — a 600 DPI page is roughly 70 times the pixel count of a 72 DPI one, which is why it takes noticeably longer.

The practical rule: if the page is mostly words, choose PNG. JPG compression works by discarding detail the eye tolerates in photographs, but that same behaviour puts faint smudges around the sharp edges of letters — visible if you zoom, and unpleasant when printed. If the page is mostly a photograph, JPG at quality 90 or above is indistinguishable and a fraction of the size.
Creating WebP relies on your browser’s encoder, which today means Chrome or Edge. The tool checks and tells you rather than quietly handing you a mislabelled file.
Transparent PNG Pages
A PDF page has no background of its own — the white you see is simply the absence of ink. That means when you export to PNG you can switch off the white fill and get a genuinely transparent image, where only the text, lines and graphics are opaque.
This is worth knowing about because it solves a common annoyance: dropping a PDF diagram, logo sheet or signature page onto a coloured slide or letterhead without a white rectangle around it. Most online converters flatten everything onto white and give you no choice. JPG can never do this, since the format has no alpha channel.

Working Out Print Size
If you are printing, the arithmetic is simple: pixels ÷ DPI = inches. An A4 page rendered at 300 DPI gives 2480 × 3508 pixels, which prints back at exactly A4 size with professional sharpness. Print that same file at half the size and you are effectively at 600 DPI — even crisper. Try to blow it up to A2 and you drop to about 150 DPI, which will look soft.
So the rule of thumb is: render at the DPI you need for the final printed size. If you plan to enlarge, render higher to begin with, because upscaling an image afterwards cannot recover detail that was never captured.

Why Not Just Take a Screenshot?
Because a screenshot captures your screen, not the page. It is limited to your display resolution — typically well under 150 DPI — so it is unusable for print, it includes whatever your PDF viewer drew around the page, and the crop is only as accurate as your hand. Rendering exports the page itself at whatever resolution you ask for, with clean edges and nothing extra.
Troubleshooting
The page went unresponsive at 600 DPI
A 600 DPI A4 page needs roughly 140 MB of memory just for the raw bitmap, before compression. On a phone or an older laptop, a long document at that setting can exhaust available memory. Convert in page ranges, or drop to 300 DPI — which is still full print quality.
My text looks slightly fuzzy
That is JPG compression around sharp edges. Switch to PNG, or push JPG quality to 95 or above. For text-heavy pages PNG is simply the correct choice.
The PDF is password-protected
Open it in a PDF viewer with the password, save an unprotected copy, then convert that. No legitimate tool should bypass document encryption.
WebP is not available
Your browser cannot create WebP — that currently needs Chrome or Edge. Use JPG or PNG instead.
